Matt Rakowski | My roof had been replaced by my homes previous owner using the services of Murray Roofing in February of 2014. In March of 2019 I noticed that an area above the garage was leaking. I called Murray and an estimator was sent out. Following his inspection the estimator explained to me that the ridge vent had been installed incorrectly and that this was the cause of the leak. At this time neither I nor the estimator knew that it was Murray Roofing who had replaced the roof in 2014. Their representative left by stating that I'd have an estimate for the repair within the week. In the meantime, I looked up the warranty information that was provided at the time I purchased my home and it turns out that Murray had installed the roof. When the 1000 estimate arrived via email the following week, I responded by asking if they could do any better considering that they had been the ones who incorrectly installed the roof in the first place. I received a reply stating they could do no better and that someone had done work on the roof since they installed it. This I knew to be false and stated that it was I who had merely applied some roof sealant on the shingles to prevent further water damage. I reminded them that their own estimator said that the install was faulty, and that I would post reviews on as many sites as I could find to bring light to this wrong. Two days later I received a call from Mike, the general manager, saying that the warranty for workmanship was only 12 months and that the fascia and soffit material being installed backwards by someone other than Murray was to blame for the problem. Now I don't know if the fascia and soffit were installed by the original builder or not but I do know that they are not the cause of the leak. I had been up on the roof both before and after this suggestion and had taken a garden hose and liberally sprayed the area in question and i did not see so much as a drip. Not to mention, the house was built in 1994, if the fascia and soffit were installed incorrectly at that time wouldn't the leak have developed prior to 2019? No one but the original builder and Murray Roofing have had their hands on the roof. Mike then went on to state that his estimator, Victor, was wrong and that the vent can be installed that way. He then reiterated that regardless of how the leak originated the 12 month labor warranty applies. So I guess my take from all of this is supposed to be that not only does the individual that they sent out to perform the estimate not know the difference between an improperly installed ridge cap and one installed to industry standards but I'm also to disregard his opinion and allow that even if they had admitted to installing the cap incorrectly, the 12 month warranty protects them from any further responsibility and I'd be on the hook for 20 of the cost of the 2014 roof replacement if I want something done about it. At the end of the day I wasn't looking for them to do the job for free. Just take into consideration that they were likely a contributing factor in the reason why the roof was leaking in the first place and provide me an estimate accordingly. This was too much to ask from Murray Roofing. |
